TEACHING IN A BLOCK
We hope that the following possibilities of a block schedule will become a reality for Marist:
-Increased learning that emphasizes depth and understanding over coverage and
recall
-Increased opportunities for immediate and meaningful feedback as students work
-Increased quality of student/teacher relationships
-Increased opportunities for students to learn actively
-Increase of usable instructional time
-Pace of day and week slows
-Less fragmentation and increased coherence (within and between courses)
For those possibilities to become reality, we will all need to keep the following key considerations front and center as we grow, change, and challenge each other:
-Student engagement
-Instructional variety
-What "really" matters
-Well-designed lesson plans built around clear learning goals
In our planning and organization for future professional development and collaboration, these considerations will be addressed through a renewed commitment to and focus on:
A. Instructional methods that shift the primary role of teacher from one who delivers information to one who facilitates learning
B. Curriculum planning and design that emphasizes coherence and understanding over covering content and topics
